Isabelle Cote

Isabelle Côté received her PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto in 2014. Based on over nine-months of fieldwork, her dissertation examines the impact of internal migration on Sons of the Soil conflicts in China and Indonesia. She was a guest researcher at Minzu University of China, Beijing and she conducted fieldwork in Qinghai and Inner Mongolia between May and September 2011. Since 2002, she has travelled extensively in China, from Xinjiang to Guangdong, also spending one year as an exchange student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is currently a junior research fellow at KITLV (Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies), in Leiden, where she examines the effect of internal migration on the concept of citizenship in Indonesia. She has published in the Journal of Ethnic and Racial StudiesEducation, Citizenship and Social Justice; PS: Political Science and Politics and Asian Ethnicity, as well as a chapter on the effect of internal migration on Uyghur’s autonomy in Xinjiang in the volume Political Autonomy and Divided Societies (2012).
